A building reduces to a function

An energy model answers one question per run. A surrogate — a single function fitted to a small, deliberately chosen set of full simulations — answers in a millisecond, as many times as you like. The article is about how one is built, and mostly about how you check that it is telling the truth, which is the part nobody writes down.

  • The problem: why a handful of variables is already thousands of runs.
  • The idea, and what is actually being traded away.
  • How one is built — choosing the variables, sampling, fitting, encoding.
  • How it is checked. Against runs it has never seen.
  • What it unlocks: sensitivity, optimisation, an answer in the sketch phase.
  • Where it stops. Interpolation only, one model per building, and never the reported number.

No date. It publishes when the runs behind it are finished and checked, and not before.

What was found

The question, the method in outline, the result, and the conditions under which it holds — enough for a reader to judge whether the finding applies to a building of theirs, and enough to argue with.

Never how to reproduce it

No experiment plans, no parameter sets, no internal tool names, no project numbers. A textbook fact stays a textbook fact — encoding a circular variable as a sine and cosine pair is one — but the specific design behind a study is not published.

Monthly, when there is something

The intended rhythm is one a month. It is not a quota. A month that produces nothing worth reporting produces no article, and that is the rhythm working rather than failing.

Reference pages are the exception

The Building science documents teach openly and in full, because that is their entire purpose. The distinction is deliberate: methods we work by are described, studies we ran are reported.
